No matter what a company prefers to call the program they all share very similar goals. Typically, the programs are pushed from the vendor to their customer to add value to their products and help lock in sales.
We have found VMI programs help with customer loyalty, allow you to gain more business but rarely allow a vendor to increase prices. VMI programs are particularly valuable when they are integrated into the operations of all participants. Typically, this has not been done very well. Many organizations fall short of actually using and capitalizing on the data they can now access. They talk a good story but end up falling short of the ultimate goal.
